Why do braces and other methods of teeth straightening such as Invisalign cost so much?

One of the reasons  that orthodontic fees can seem high is because the treatment rendered spans a long period of time. Even after active treatment is complete, there are still at least 2 years of follow-up visits which may include everything from retainer adjustments to taking additional x-rays to check the eruption of the wisdom teeth. These follow up visits are built into the original fee.  Orthodontists typically do not add any additional costs at the end of treatment.

What else affects cost?

You may not know it but the science of orthodontics has progressed considerably in the last 20 years! Braces work faster and better [but cost more to fabricate]! Advances in diagnostic technology abound as well. For instance, at Dr. Bubon’s offices we have modern low-radiation digital x-ray machines. Traditional x-ray machines are less expensive but are do not give as good a quality of an image. At our offices, we insist on high-quality service and the latest in orthodontic technology without adding to the cost of treatment.   We have even purchased cutting-edge technology such as the new CBT x-ray unit! This gives us a 3-D image of the jaw bone which is very helpful for patients that have impacted teeth.  Making orthodontics more affordable treatment does not mean the quality of care has to be lower.
